How to prepare a sermon

How to prepare a sermon

Young people usually ask me, how do I prepare messages? Here are a few steps on how to prepare a message or a sermon. First thing, if you want to preach anywhere or in your Sunday service, ask the Lord what exactly is in His heart. What does He want you to speak or share? Get the topic from His heart and then read those scriptures or that topic from the Bible. If there’s a passage, read that complete passage and read, what is before that passage and what is after that passage.

If needed, read a few chapters before that passage and after the passage so that you get a complete and clear context, the entire setting of that portion on who spoke, why they spoke, when they spoke, and the historical facts. This way, you become clear about the subject and then you start praying and seeking God and ask the Lord what He wants you to know from that portion. What does He want you to understand and convey to the people?

Then the next thing is, start seeing Jesus in that portion. You got to train yourself to see Jesus in every portion of the scriptures. In your everyday Bible reading, whether it is from Old Testament, New Testament, Psalms, the prophets, or from anywhere, or poetry, you have to see Jesus in every page of your daily Bible reading. If you have not seen Jesus in your daily Bible reading, it means you have not read the Bible that day. So getting back to preparing the message, see Jesus in the portion of the scripture that He has given you and see what He is saying. You must see the heart of Jesus in that portion, get the Heart of Jesus and then communicate that to people. Then, find out similar truths, parallel truths of that message and that portion of the scripture, in other places of the scriptures.

And then finally, bring in your testimony concerning that scripture as to how that scripture has worked in your life in the past or in the present and that’s how you speak. And when you speak, you totally speak depending on the Lord and in absolute nothingness of self. You convey God’s heart to the people. This is how you prepare a message; or rather you yourself become the message. Praise the Lord!

In the Old Testament, we find that there was always a specific call to people to become a prophet of God, but in the New Testament because of the work of the Cross because of the grace of our Lord Jesus Christ, everyone is called to be a prophet. Everyone becomes a prophet, priest and a king.
